This is a frequently asked question so we're putting it here on the blog. Here's the link to the Dental Assisting National Board's (DANB) state-specific information chart:

There are no educational requirements to perform basic duties as a dental assistant. You must, however, complete a two-day radiology course to take x-rays. This radiology course is currently not offered in our program but is offered at nearby Creighton University, for $280.
So why get training? Because your chances of getting a job will be much higher if you've had the training and experience our program offers. Additionally, you will feel much more prepared working in an office after going through our course. When your doctor asks you to grab the enamel hatchet or relign a denture, you'll know what to do. At CDAA, we give you hands-on training right from the start. Upon completion of the course, you will have had 190 hours of lecture and clinical experience.
CDAA was approved January 22, 2010 from the Nabraska Department of Private Career Schools. If you would like to enroll, we are now accepting applications. Please email us at info@centerfordentalassisting.com and we will send you an enrollment agreement. We respond to emails within 24 hours.
If you live in nearby Iowa and are planning on taking our course, check out this website for information about dental assisting in Iowa. http://www.state.ia.us/dentalboard/da.html
Basically you have to have your first employer sign a "dental assistant trainee" form saying that for 6 months he/she will be in the room whenever you're working on a patient. After this 6 months is up, you can take the Iowa State board exam to be a Registered Dental Assistant in Iowa.
